Against the Legalization of Marijuana

I am firmly opposed to the legalization of marijuana.
Legalization would make this drug more available and accessible to children and, as a paediatric surgeon, I am very concerned about the effect it has on developing brains. Research has shown that marijuana has many short-term and long-term consequences for both the physical and mental health of children. To legalize the drug wholesale, with limited consideration of the public health impacts, is extremely dangerous.
I support dispensing medical marijuana through a pharmacy only when a patient has a prescription from a doctor. There are specific circumstances, particularly with patients suffering from cancer, where physician prescribed medical marijuana is an appropriate course of treatment. But like every drug dispensed at a pharmacy, it should be prescribed carefully and in the best interest of the patient.
I will not stand by to see this drug made more readily available to kids.
